The Wolfgang Kiessling International Prize is an annually bestowed global award, dedicated to bringing worldwide attention and support to significant achievements in the field of conservation practice, theory, and research that add substantially to humankind’s efforts and knowledge for the benefit of all life on Earth.
Applicants for the Kiessling Prize should have made tangible, demonstrable contributions to the effort to combat the Sixth Mass Extinction, which will have a long-term, meaningful impact on work to preserve the world’s ecosystems. The candidate’s work should be innovative, demonstrating an ability to develop creative solutions that could be implemented on an international scale.
The winning award recipient will be a credentialed conservation scientist who can proactively and profoundly make the case for zoos and aquariums working to fight the Sixth Mass Extinction. The Prize recipient will travel to the designated award ceremony, take part in a major media campaign carrying news of the award and their prize-winning conservation work and receive a grant to support their efforts.
Prize Information
- The Prize Committee will ultimately select one individual who will be awarded the Kiessling Prize and an unrestricted grant of US$80,000 to further their work to make significant contributions to the practical application, research and theory of species protection.
Nomination Criteria
- All applicants for the Kiessling Prize must be self-nominated
- Nominations by third parties will not be accepted.
Application Requirements
- Submission of a completed application form
- 1 to 3 minute video clip highlighting the applicant’s conservation achievements and qualifications for the Kiessling Prize
- An evidence-based narrative (up to 750 words) about the individual and his/her work
- Explanation of how grant funds would be used to advance conservation if applicant is chosen as the Prize recipient
- CV/Resume/Professional Bio
- One to three professional references.
