The University of New South Wales is thrilled to invite nominations for its Willgoss Choral Composition Prize aimed at encouraging and promoting the creation of an original work for unaccompanied choir, in support of the thriving choral program at UNSW Australia as represented by the Music Performance Unit.
Objective
- The objective of the Prize is to inspire, encourage and promote composers to be creative in composing choral music in Australia.
Prize Information
- The winner of the Prize will receive a cash prize of $AUD3500.00 in addition to the opportunity to have their Score performed by Corde at its annual recital in 2025 and archivally captured.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Prize is open to any individual who is a permanent resident or Australian citizen. There is no age limit.
- If an entrant is under the age of eighteen (18), a parent/guardian must enter the Prize on their behalf.
- Only one entry per entrant will be accepted.
Ineligibility Criteria
- Employees of UNSW Australia and their immediate family members are not eligible to enter. (By “employees” they mean full-time and part-time employees, employed on either a permanent or casual basis. By “immediate family members” they mean children, siblings and parents of the employee).
- Incomplete entries will be deemed invalid and excluded from the Prize.
- Defamatory, racist or otherwise offensive entries will be invalid and excluded from the Prize.
Selection Criteria
- The selection criteria used to select the winning entry will be based on the jury’s assessment of the merit of the Score with regard to:
- musical creativity, originality, and personality;
- the demonstration of a high level of craft, technical competence; care and professionalism in the presentation of the Score, and
- aesthetic qualities and matches Corde’s aptitude.
Application Requirements
- Submit an 8 to 10 minute original Choral Score (Score) for unaccompanied mixed choir to be performed by Corde that must include 4 to 6 voice parts including soprano, alto, tenor and bass (SATB to SSATBB) with no further division of any vocal part permissible; and
- The Score must be an original work of the entrant and not copied from any other work and must not have been previously performed in public, recorded for public release or performance or rewarded in a previous composition competition or prize.
