Deadline: 27 March 2025
The Cancer Research UK is seeking nominations for its Early Detection and Diagnosis Primer Award to encourage scientists at all career stages to engage with the early detection and diagnosis of cancer field.
It will support new and exploratory research ideas and/or pilot studies of high scientific risk and potential reward. It supports the development of new partnerships and exploration of highly novel concepts, involving researchers from any research area, including from non-traditional cancer fields.
To stimulate and develop the early detection field, they welcome applications from researchers at any career stage, from early career researchers to established scientists. They want to promote collaboration across a broad range of research disciplines. Applicants to this Award may therefore come from any research area, including non-traditional cancer fields, bringing innovative ideas and tools to early detection.
The ED&D Primer Award supports new and pioneering research ideas and/or pilot studies of high scientific risk, allowing the development of new partnerships and exploration of highly novel concepts. The Award may also support the creation of new collaborations/consortia or the establishment and development of a researcher in the early detection or diagnosis field, with the clear aim of applying the skills and collaborations developed to early detection and diagnosis questions. They envisage that data generated or collaborations established through a Primer Award will form the basis for a more extensive research project.
Focus Areas
- To achieve the goal of developing the early detection and diagnosis field, they encourage applications from a broad range of fields, including but not limited to:
- Biomedicine
- Engineering
- Physics
- Statistics
- Mathematics
- Chemistry
- Informatics
- Computer and Data Sciences
Funding Information
- You can apply for up to £100,000 through an ED&D Primer Award. Funding lasts up to 12 months.
Eligibility Criteria
- They will accept applications from researchers at all career stages, from postdoctoral researchers with 2-3 years of research experience following a PhD, through to established senior researchers.
- To be eligible, the lead applicant on the Award must be based at a UK institution. However, co- investigators and collaborators can be based at international institutions.
- Applicants are not required to have previous experience within cancer research, but a clear link between the proposed project, early detection or diagnosis of cancer and a vision towards future clinical implementation is required. The Early Detection & Diagnosis Research Committee will look for appropriate involvement of clinical and/or population expertise to ensure line-of-sight and the eventual applicability of the proposed research to the clinic.
