Topics & Themes
- Participants have to create a one minute video that addresses one of this year’s global topics, suggests a sustainable solution and connects how human population growth impacts that topic. The themes are as follows:
- Child Wellbeing: Child wellbeing encompasses anything that makes children healthy, safe, and happy. This could be related to their education, the food they eat, what their home is like, who cares for them, and beyond. Child wellbeing is a broad global topic and encompasses a lot of challenges, but your video can only be 60 seconds. Rather than taking on the entire topic, they recommend to focus on one part of the topic (a subtopic) such as:
- Education Access
- Child Labor
- Environmental Justice
- Wealth Inequality
- Healthy Children
- Teen Pregnancy and Marriage
- Rainforest Ecosystems: Rainforests are the oldest living ecosystems on our planet. Some rainforests present today are more than 70 million years old! These unique habitats are critical for regulating climate and supporting many forms of life. The topic of rainforest ecosystems is broad and encompasses a lot of challenges, but your video can only be 60 seconds. Rather than taking on the entire topic, they recommend to focus on one part of the topic (a subtopic) such as:
- Biodiversity
- Deforestation
- Zoonotic Disease
- Indigenous Communities
- Ecosystem Services
- Globalization
- Sanitation: Sanitation and clean water access are recognized as human rights by the United Nations, but access to well-managed sanitation systems is a global challenge. Sanitation refers to having clean water available for drinking and cleaning, and having a system in place for handling human waste. Sanitation is a broad global topic and encompasses a lot of challenges, but your video can only be 60 seconds. Rather than taking on the entire topic, they recommend to focus on one part of the topic (a subtopic) such as:
- Sanitation Access
- Sewage Treatment Infrastructure
- Water Contamination
- Urbanization
- Public Health
- Economic Impacts

Prize Information
- Videos are judged by topic. Within each topic, awards will be presented as follows:
- High School (9th-12th):
- First Place winner receives: $1,200
- Second Place winner receives: $600
- Two Honorable Mention winners receive: $300
- Middle School (6th-8th):
- First Place winner receives: $600
- Second Place winner receives: $300
- Global Finalists:
- Videos that were chosen as global finalists for each topic will be awarded a $80 prize for high school and a $50 prize for middle school.
- International by Region Honor:
- Seven prizes will be awarded to the best video by world region (Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean).
- State Honor:
- 50 prizes will be awarded to the best video in each U.S. state.
