Are you an early or mid-career researcher developing your academic career in the social sciences and humanities? Would you like to participate in a workshop that will support you through the process of publishing a research-based article in an international journal while reflecting about the existing structural barriers for publishing in these journals? The University of the West Indies in Jamaica, in collaboration with the Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) at the School of Advanced Study, University of London, is calling for participation in a free three-day publishing and training workshop for early career researchers and postgraduates.
The Workshop
- The workshop aims to support ten researchers to broaden their understanding of the publication process and prepare a scholarly article for submission to an international journal. Participants in the workshop will be assigned a mentor who will offer advice on their manuscript before and after the workshop. The workshop will also offer sessions that allow participants to acquire and critically reflect on other career development skills, such as the preparation of grant applications or training in forms of collaborative writing.
- This three-day workshop will be face-to-face, with morning and afternoon sessions led by lecturers and journal editors from the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica and the School of Advanced Study at the University of London.
- The call is aimed at early or mid-career researchers based in the Caribbean whose research utilises qualitative approaches within the humanities or the social sciences. Particular expertise in the training/mentor team includes anthropology, sociology, geography, history, politics, cultural studies, literature and visual arts, languages, socio-linguistics, post/de-colonial theory, and cognate/related disciplines. To be eligible you must have completed your undergraduate degree and are research active.
- This call is also part of a collective effort between universities in several Latin American and Caribbean countries and the School of Advanced Study, University of London, to promote the dissemination of research carried out in the region within international circuits and to reflect on the structural barriers that prevent or hinder the publication of such research in international journals.
- The workshop is funded by the British Academy’s International Writing Workshops 2022 programme, which is supported by the UK Government’s Global Challenges Research Fund.
Partial Grants
- The workshop is free of cost and includes lunch and refreshments. Accommodation and travel costs are not included but they have limited funding available to provide at least two partial grants to contribute towards travel and accommodation costs and/or childcare or care for dependents.
Submission Criteria
- Applications should include:
- A summary or extract of a draft article with a maximum length of 2,000 words, a 200-word abstract, and a title.
- A two-page CV.
- A brief cover letter (1-2 pages) explaining the motivation for participating in the workshop and how the person will benefit from it.
- Applications must also include first and last names, current affiliation, nationality, residential address and contact telephone number. Please note that those without an affiliation can also apply.
- Those selected will be asked to commit to submitting a 5,000-word manuscript one month in advance of the workshop.
- In order to increase the participation of minorities and under-represented groups, they particularly encourage the participation of people belonging to racialised minorities, as well as women, people of minority sexual orientation and gender identity, and people with disabilities.
