Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Research Program

The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Research Program provides an opportunity for K–12 educators from the United States to conduct research and engage in other professional learning experiences abroad for three to six months. Participants work on individual research projects on a topic relevant to education in the United States and the host country, take courses at a host university, and collaborate with colleagues on educational practices to improve student learning.

Program Description

• Distinguished educators who are selected to participate in the program will:
  • Design and implement a Research Project related to education in the United States and their host country.
  • Build global networks of researchers, practitioners, and policy makers.
  • Exchange ideas and best educational practices.
  • Develop resources and tools that can be used long after the project ends.

Benefits

• Participants may bring dependents with them to the host country and will receive a $2,000 allowance for each dependent that accompanies them for at least 80 percent of the program.
• The program covers travel costs for the orientation and host country experience.
• Additionally, each participant receives a stipend to cover in-country expenses associated with participation in the program, such as housing, meals, transportation, and other necessary items.
• The stipend is not intended to replace a participant’s salary.
• Educators typically negotiate with their schools and districts regarding fully or partially paid leave and benefits. The amount of the stipend provided to each participant will depend on the host country, the duration of the field experience, and other factors.

Duration

• The length of the program is three to six months and can take place during the spring or fall semester,

Eligibility Criteria

• The participating host countries and territories: Brazil, Colombia, Finland, Greece, Iceland, India, Mexico, Morocco, Singapore, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
• To be eligible for the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Research Program, the applicant must:
  • be a citizen of the United States;
  • reside in the U.S. the United States, a U.S. territory, or a school associated with the Department of Defense Education Activity;
  • hold at least a bachelor’s degree;
  • have had a minimum of three years of full-time instructional experience in a U.S. K-12 educational institution or school district;
  • be currently employed full-time with a minimum of 50% of contracted hours in a student-facing role in a U.S. K-12 educational institution or school district;
  • Not have resided abroad for five or more consecutive years in the six-year period preceding the date of application (a candidate who has lived outside the United States, a U.S. territory, or a school associated with the Department of Defense Education Activity for nine months or more during a calendar year is deemed to have resided abroad for that year).
