Paired Early Career Fellowship in Applied Research (India and Germany)

Deadline: 31-Mar-2026

The Paired Early Career Fellowship in Applied Research (PECFAR), offered by the Indo-German Science and Technology Centre, supports early career researchers from India and Germany in collaborative STEM research. Fellows engage in short-term research visits, expand professional networks, and gain financial support for travel and living expenses. This initiative fosters cross-border innovation, institutional engagement, and applied research collaborations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Overview of the Fellowship

The PECFAR is designed to enable joint research opportunities between early career researchers from India and Germany. The fellowship encourages:

  • Networking and collaboration across institutions

  • Short-term international research visits (1–2 months)

  • Exploration of applied research projects in STEM disciplines

  • Professional development and institutional engagement

This program prioritizes innovation and practical research impact, while strengthening long-term Indo-German research partnerships.

Fellowship Benefits

The fellowship provides financial and logistical support to selected pairs:

  • Monthly fellowship: €2,300, pro rata based on duration of stay

  • Travel grant: €1,500 per awardee, covering:

    • Round-trip economy airfare

    • Visa fees and medical/travel insurance

    • Airport transfers and local networking visits

  • Short-term stay: 1–2 months in the partner country

  • Structured visits: Encouragement to visit multiple institutions to maximize collaboration opportunities

Note: Fellowship duration cannot be extended beyond two months.

Who is Eligible?

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Early career researchers in academia, research institutions, or industry

  • Hold at least a Master’s degree in Science or a four-year Bachelor’s in Engineering

  • PhD candidates are eligible if they hold an employment contract with their home institution

  • Must have employment or fellowship tenure of at least 18 months from the application deadline

  • Maximum age: 40 years at the time of application

  • For German applicants, preference is given to those with >4 years of professional experience

Additional Notes:

  • Applicants must apply as paired researchers (one from India, one from Germany)

  • Proposals must focus on applied STEM research

Why It Matters

The fellowship accelerates cross-border research collaboration by:

  • Expanding international professional networks

  • Promoting knowledge exchange and applied research in STEM

  • Enabling early career researchers to gain exposure to diverse institutional environments

  • Supporting innovation-driven solutions with practical applications

How to Apply / How It Works

Step 1: Form a Research Pair

  • Partner with a researcher from the other country

  • Identify a joint applied research project in STEM

Step 2: Prepare Joint Proposal

  • Outline project objectives, methodology, and expected outcomes

  • Include plan for short-term visits and institutional engagement

Step 3: Submit Application

  • Complete the official PECFAR application form

  • Attach CVs, proof of qualifications, and employment contracts/fellowship details

Step 4: Selection and Notification

  • Fellows are selected based on project relevance, feasibility, and collaboration potential

  • Each selected pair receives financial support and guidance for travel and research

Step 5: Conduct Research Visits

  • Undertake visits 1–2 months in the partner country

  • Connect with multiple institutions to maximize network and collaboration

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying as an individual rather than a paired team

  • Selecting research outside the STEM applied research focus

  • Ignoring residual fellowship or employment tenure requirements

  • Exceeding the maximum fellowship duration

  • Omitting essential documentation like employment contracts or CVs

Tips for Success

  • Clearly define joint research goals and deliverables

  • Highlight the applied nature of the project

  • Include a detailed plan for institutional engagement

  • Emphasize innovation and cross-border impact

  • Ensure both researchers meet eligibility criteria
