The American Water is currently accepting applications to provide equitable educational opportunities for students across the national footprint through the Inclusion and Diversity Scholarship.
This scholarship is part of the continued commitment to being an inclusive, diverse, and equitable company and supports the future leaders of tomorrow. The Scholarship is designed to support the educational aspirations of students who represent lived experiences and backgrounds that are underrepresented in the utility industry and who value the advancement of inclusion and diversity in all aspects of society.
The scholarship is administered by Scholarship America, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals.
Funding Information
- If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $10,000 award. Up to 10 awards will be granted.
- Awards are renewable up to three (3) additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, on the basis of maintaining a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and full-time enrollment in an eligible major. Applicants must also continue to maintain residence and/or college enrollment in one of the eligible states.
- Awards are for undergraduate study only.
- Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of American Water Works Service Company, Inc. Payment is made in early August.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants to the American Water Inclusion and Diversity Scholarship must:
- Self-identify as a member of at least one of the following underrepresented groups:
- American Indian or Alaska Native
- Asian
- Black or African American
- Hispanic or Latino
- Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
- Multiracial
- Female (any race or ethnicity)
- Be high school seniors or graduates, or current college undergraduates, residing and/or attending college in one of the following states:
- Alabama
- California
- Florida
- Georgia
- Hawaii
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Kansas
- Kentucky
- Louisiana
- Maryland
- Missouri
- New Jersey
- New York
- Ohio
- Oklahoma
- Pennsylvania
- Tennessee
- Texas
- Utah
- Virginia
- Washington
- West Virginia
- Be planning to enroll in full-time undergraduate study, pursuing a certificate or degree in a non-medical STEM or business-related field, at an accredited four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year
- Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on 4.0 scale (or its equivalent)
- Able to demonstrate a sincere commitment to inclusion and diversity in their lives, community, or education in a non-medical STEM major or a business major.
- Self-identify as a member of at least one of the following underrepresented groups:
Selection of Finalists
- Scholarship finalists are selected on the basis of:
- Academic record
- Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
- Work experience
- A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
- Unusual personal or family circumstances
- An online recommendation
- Essay
