CFAs: Grants to Journalists and Artists for Productions about the Ocean (Brazil)

Deadline: 20 April 2025

The Boticário Group Foundation for Nature Protection, in cooperation with UNESCO and the Museum of Tomorrow, are seeking applications for the fifth edition of the Conexão Oceano Environmental Communication which will support journalistic and artistic productions related to ocean conservation.

Theme

  • Art and Ocean

Categories

  • Art Category: The production of original works that discuss, in an engaging and meaningful way, the ocean and its coastal-marine environments, including their species, landscapes and activities. Priority will be given to projects that manage to translate complex environmental issues into transformative artistic experiences, demonstrating how art can be a powerful tool for raising awareness and understanding contemporary environmental challenges.
  • Journalist Category: The production of reports or series of reports for print, television, radio or internet news outlets, addressing how artistic expressions can promote engagement, social change and action in favor of ocean conservation (and vice versa), stimulating reflection on the human relationship with the ocean and its challenges.

Funding Information

  • Art Category: up to five scholarships will be offered, with a net value of R$10,000.00 (ten thousand reais) each – applicable taxes will be withheld at source, plus up to R$14,000.00 (fourteen thousand reais) to support the production of the work.
  • Journalist Category: up to five reporting grants will be offered, with a net value of R$10,000.00 (ten thousand reais) each.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Art Category:
    • Artists who can demonstrate their production in the arts and participation in art circuits such as museums, universities and free courses on a regular basis for at least two years through a CV and portfolio to be submitted together with the application may apply.
    • Individual applicants may register.
    • Each participant may submit only one artistic proposal.
  • Journalist Category:
    • Graduated journalists or professionals who can prove that they have been practicing the profession regularly for at least two years, in any area (it is not necessary to be specialized in the environment) can register. The journalist must present a letter of consent from a media outlet that guarantees the publication of the report or series of reports supported by this Notice.
    • The organization will accept joint registrations of up to two professionals for the same agenda.
    • Each professional may submit up to two agenda proposals, as long as they address different topics.

Selection Criteria

  • Art Category: The evaluation will be made based on the criteria described below:
    • Relevance and originality of the proposal;
    • Artistic quality of the proposal;
    • Suitability of the proposal to the theme of the Notice;
    • Clarity and detail of the work plan;
    • Technical and budgetary feasibility of the proposal;
    • Potential impact and relevance of the work for the environmental cause.
  • Journalist Category: The evaluation will be made based on the selection criteria described below:
    • Creativity and originality: use of creative approaches, multimedia resources, data crossing, narrative, visual and/or investigative approach and themes attractive to the general public;
    • Relevance to society: compliance with the criteria and objectives of the Notice, importance of the approach for society and for the Ocean Decade;
    • Consistency of the investigation plan: questions to ask, theses to prove, indications of which municipalities or states where the report will be investigated, sources you intend to hear, references (journalistic or academic content on the topic) and how the resource should be used according to the agenda;
    • Publication/Work Plan: work execution schedule based on project selection;
    • Candidate’s portfolio and CV: professional performance, with examples of work developed (not necessarily on this topic) over the last two years.
