The German Embassy is delighted to call again for applications for the ‘German Grant for Journalism’ in cooperation with the National Press Club of Australia (NPC) – a partnership that spans more than three decades.
The German Grant for Journalism encourages Australian Journalists to present Germany-related issues in Australia. The winner will receive full funding to attend the Global Media Forum (GMF) 7.-8. July in Bonn, Germany. The GMF is an annual conference organized by Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international broadcaster and one of the most relevant international media outlets.

- Disinformation and Democracy:
- In democracies all over the world, free and independent media plays a crucial role in providing reliable information to the public thus, being a cornerstone of democracy. As more fake news spread on social media, there is an ongoing debate on how disinformation and misinformation can be encountered – in particular before and after recent elections in Australia and Germany. The influence of tech companies on national and foreign policy, and the increasing importance of generative AI bring new challenges. Disinformation campaigns are becoming increasingly dangerous, especially on social media, where bubbles have formed making discussion and counter-speeches almost impossible. In this context the question arises: How can Germany and Australia take action to protect their democratic systems against disinformation?
Funding Information
- The winner will receive an invitation to attend the Global Media Forum in Bonn, Germany in July 2025. The German Government will finance travel costs and accommodation for the duration of the Forum. The winner is free to extend the trip to other European countries at her/his own expense.
- The results of your research project should be published within six months following your research trip to Germany. Therefore, please indicate how and where you intend to publish or broadcast your project.

Application
- You are invited to submit a comprehensive, well-developed outline of a journalistic project to the assessment panel convened by the National Press Club of Australia and the German Embassy. The Assessment takes into account factors such as a detailed project outline, originality and significance of the subject matter as well as prospects for successful completion and publication. The topic has purposely been defined in less specific terms for you to choose your own angle – be it political, economic, social, cultural, autobiographic or other.
