DAS Research Project Grants & Small Grants Programme (UK and Ireland)

Applicants who have obtained part-funding for their project from another source may apply for this grant but must declare the details of the other source of funding. Similarly, applicants may apply who wish to use this grant to support an application to another source: however, award of this DAS-NIAA grant will be strictly conditional upon their subsequently obtaining the other grant support within one year of the DAS award being offered. If applicants are applying concurrently for part-support of their project from another source, then they must include a copy of that application. Applicants should note that:

• Applicants do not need to be members of the Difficult Airway Society
• Institutional signatures are not needed at time of application. However, payment of grant is conditional upon there being institutional agreement. Monies will not be paid to individuals.
• DAS will wish to share any intellectual property rights and income arising from this work with their host institution.
• Any equipment purchased by an awarded grant should be considered to be the property of DAS and will revert to DAS after the end-date of the project
• Successful applicants will be expected to present their work to the DAS Annual Meeting.

Areas of Research 

• DAS intends to interpret this aim widely as any relevant research which aids in the understanding of airway management as it relates to anaesthetic practice. Therefore, the research may include:
  • collection or analysis of data;
  • anatomical (including radiological, imaging or cadaveric/histological study);
  • clinical study of patients using airway-related apparatus;
  • volunteer studies;
  • manikin or bench studies of apparatus;
  • clinical, volunteer or animal laboratory studies of respiratory control;
  • support for national investigations of airway-related problems.
• Research that examines offset or recovery of respiratory or upper airway characteristics from anaesthesia (e.g., tracheal extubation) as well as their response to induction of anaesthesia (e.g., tracheal intubation) are also welcome.

Funding Information

• Project grants up to a maximum sum of £15,000 and Small grants up to a maximum sum of £5,000.

Application Requirements

• Applicants must submit their application online by the stated deadline. They advise you to allow sufficient time for this and factor in any potential technical difficulties you may encounter.
• Applicants can submit applications to more than one category but these must be on different subjects, i.e. the same application cannot be submitted to multiple categories.
• Applicants must complete and upload their application to ScholarOne Manuscripts as a single file in PDF format. This file should include all the documents which make up the application, i.e. the application form, CV, signed declaration, scientific abstract, lay abstract etc.
• Applicants are no longer required to submit a hard copy of their application to them in the post, however you must make sure that the electronic version that you upload has been fully signed by all relevant parties.
• All applicants must now submit an NIAA Grants EDI data capture form by email.
