RFAs: Australian Museum Eureka Prizes

Presented annually in partnership with some of the nation’s leading scientific institutions, government organisations, universities and corporations, the Eureka Prizes raise the profile of science and science engagement in the community by celebrating outstanding achievement.

• Research & Innovation
  • Environmental Research: The NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water Eureka Prize for Environmental Research is awarded for outstanding research that has led to a practical improvement in the management or protection of Australia’s natural environment.
  • Excellence in Botanical Science: The Australian Institute of Botanical Science Eureka Prize for Excellence in Botanical Science is awarded for innovative research outcomes that have led to the documentation and protection of Australian plants.
  • Excellence in Forensic Science: The University of Technology Sydney and the Australian Federal Police Eureka Prize for Excellence in Forensic Science is awarded for an outcome inspired by outstanding forensic research that combines ground-breaking quality and significant societal or academic impact.
  • Excellence in Interdisciplinary Scientific Research: The Aspire Scholarship Eureka Prize for Excellence in Interdisciplinary Scientific Research is awarded for an outstanding research outcome that was only possible due to the integration of two or more disciplines or bodies of specialised knowledge.
  • Excellence in Research Software: The Australian Research Data Commons Eureka Prize for Excellence in Research Software is awarded for the development, maintenance or extension of software that has enabled significant new scientific research.
  • Infectious Diseases Research: The Australian Infectious Diseases Research Centre Eureka Prize for Infectious Diseases Research is awarded for outstanding infectious diseases research that benefits, or has the potential to benefit, human health.
  • Innovative Use of Technology: The ANSTO Eureka Prize for Innovative Use of Technology is awarded for an innovative application of a new or existing technology that has led to a significantly improved research outcome.
  • Outstanding Early Career Researcher: The Macquarie University Eureka Prize for Outstanding Early Career Researcher is awarded for outstanding scientific research conducted by an individual early career researcher.
  • Outstanding Science in Safeguarding Australia: The Department of Defence Eureka Prize for Outstanding Science in Safeguarding Australia is awarded for outstanding research that has led to, or has the potential to lead to, practical improvements for Australia’s national security or capability for defence.
  • Scientific Research: The UNSW Eureka Prize for Scientific Research is awarded for outstanding curiosity-driven scientific research.
  • Sustainability Research: The University of Sydney Eureka Prize for Sustainability Research is awarded for research that has directly contributed to new or improved sustainability outcomes.
• Leadership
  • Emerging Leader in Science: The Eureka Prize for Emerging Leader in Science is awarded to an individual scientist who has used their leadership skills to create impact within their discipline or more broadly.
  • Leadership in Science: The Eureka Prize for Leadership in Science is awarded to an individual scientist who has successfully integrated their scientific expertise with the management skills necessary to nurture, inspire and mobilise their peers.
  • Outstanding Mentor of Researchers: The University of Technology Sydney Eureka Prize for Outstanding Mentor of Researchers is awarded to an individual scientist who has helped develop the next generation of Australia’s scientific researchers.
• Science Engagement
  • Innovation in Citizen Science: The Department of Industry, Science and Resources Eureka Prize for Innovation in Citizen Science is awarded for outstanding citizen science practice in Australia, through an innovative research and community engagement project.
  • Promoting Understanding of Science: The Celestino Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science is awarded to an individual scientist who has shared their expertise with a broad audience – informing, enthusing and engaging the Australian public.
  • Science Journalism: The Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Science Journalism is awarded to an Australian journalist or journalist team whose work is assessed as having most effectively communicated scientific issues to the public.
  • Societal Impact in Science: The UNSW Eureka Prize for Societal Impact in Science is awarded to individuals or teams who, through partnership with industry, government or not-for-profit, have transformed their scientific research into practical solutions that address pressing global societal challenges.
  • STEM Inclusion: The Department of Industry, Science and Resources Eureka Prize for STEM Inclusion is awarded for an initiative that has led to greater inclusion in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the Australian community.
• School Science
  • Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize – Primary and Secondary School: The University of Sydney Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize is awarded for a short film that communicates a scientific concept in an accessible and engaging way.

Prize Information

• There is a prize pool of $10,000 to be shared between the winners and their schools.

Eligibility Criteria

• Sponsored by the University of Sydney, the Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize encourages students to explore a scientific concept, discovery or invention, or test their own scientific hypothesis in a short film.
• Students can work individually or in teams of up to six people.
