Introducing Resonance Residency: Empowering FLINTA Musicians in Europe

Deadline: 15 February 2025

The Karne Kunst in partnership with Sorora e.V., are thrilled to invite applications for the Resonance Residency Programme designed to amplify the voices of underrepresented FLINTA (female, lesbian, intersex, non-binary, transgender, and agender) musicians including composers, performers, sound artists, and DJs of various musical genres with migrant backgrounds across Europe.

This two-month residency provides the time, space, and resources for musicians to thrive. Through mentorship, workshops, and public performances, Resonance aims to foster creativity, collaboration, and cultural exchange, enriching both the artists’ careers and the European music scene.

The concrete objective of the Resonance residency is to empower musicians with migrant backgrounds in Europe by providing them with the time, space, and resources to develop a new musical project, strengthen their professional careers, and increase the visibility of their work through mentorship, collaborations, and public performances.

Participants will create a new track/song/composition, perform in two paid public concerts, and professionally record a new track in a Berlin studio. The program also aims to promote cultural diversity, foster inclusion in the European music industry, and develop innovative strategies to engage audiences.

Benefits

  • The Residency will provide:
    • Travel costs to and from the residency (country of residence within the EU) at the start and end of the program, arranged directly by the organizer.
    • A Deutschland Ticket for unlimited regional travel within Germany during May and June.
    • Accommodation during the residency at Projektraum Coswig.
    • A basic budget for meals.
    • Payment for up to two public presentations (gig fees) – one in Coswig and one in Berlin.
    • Access to workshops and talks.
    • Basic technical equipment for performances and workshops (specific equipment to be confirmed).
    • Professional mixing and mastering of one song/track per participant or band (song/track selected by the participants).
    • Gig fees for up to two performances (one in Coswig and one in Berlin) for the participant that applied to the residency.

Program Specifications

  • The residency will take place over two months at Projektraum Coswig.
  • Selected participants will engage in:
    • Collaborative sessions with fellow artists.
    • Workshops that will cover key topics such as promotion, grant writing, etc. to support participants’ professional growth.
    • Mentorship with industry professionals.
    • Paid public performances in Coswig and Berlin (up to two).
    • Professional studio recording of one track in a studio in Berlin.
    • Duration: Participants must commit to the entire residency period (May-June 2025)

Role & Responsibilities

  • Participants are expected to actively engage in all program activities.
  • Participants must respect the residency’s schedule, rules, and fellow residents.
  • Participants are required to showcase their work during public performances as part of the residency’s objectives.
  • Agree to the Non-Discrimination Clause.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must identify as FLINTA musicians.
  • Applicants must be 18 years or older at the time of application.
  • Applicants must reside in a European country and have a migrant background.
  • Open to composers, performers, sound artists and DJs of various musical genres.
  • Applications are open to solo artists, duos, or trios.
  • Up to 6 musical projects will be selected for the residency. If applying as a group (duo or trio), financial support (e.g., travel expenses, gig fees) will be provided to only one participant from the group. Other members of the group may fully participate in all sessions, workshops, and recordings, but the group will be considered as one project and no additional financial support will be extended to other members.

Selection Criteria

  • Applicants will be evaluated based on the following:
    • Artistic quality.
    • Alignment with the residency’s objectives.
    • Relevance of the proposed project to their artistic growth and career development.
    • Feasibility of the proposed musical project within the residency’s time frame.
    • The selection committee’s decisions are final and cannot be appealed.
