Artist in Residence Program 2025 (Canada)

Applicants can submit their applications for the Artsnb Artist in Residence Program.

The Artist in Residence Program is intended for individual artists to participate in residencies and New Brunswick public or private institutions and organizations to host professional artists, and enable them to pursue specific projects relating to their creative work.

This program is divided into two components:

  • Artist in residence – Artists: to participate in residency opportunities in New Brunswick or abroad, or for residency opportunities in Quebec as per an agreement with the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and;
  • Artist in Residence – Host Organizations: for not-for-profit, for-profit and institutions to host artists in residence.

Objectives

  • Artists:
    • The Artist in Residence programs for artists are designed to:
      • Increase opportunities for New Brunswick professional artists to participate in residencies in New Brunswick or elsewhere;
      • Facilitate creation, creative research, and/or networking opportunities, as well as encouraging artists’ contact with the clientele of the host institution or organization.
    • There are two options for artists wishing to undertake an artistic residency:
      • A residency at an organization based in New Brunswick or beyond;
      • A residency at an organization based in Québec; the New Brunswick Arts Board (artsnb) and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) have partnered on an artist residency program. The agreement provides professional artists with the opportunity to pursue a one-to-three month residency in the province of Québec.
  • Host Organizations:
    • The objectives of the program are:
      • To increase opportunities for professional artists to undertake specific creative projects while being hosted by New Brunswick institutions or organizations;
      • To facilitate creation, creative research, and/or networking opportunities, as well as encouraging artists’ contact with the clientele of the host institution or organization;

Funding Information

  • Artists:
    • Gets up to a total maximum of $10,000.
  • Host Organizations:
    • Gets a maximum of $10,000 for periods of 6 to 12 months.

Ineligible Expenses 

  • Artists:
    • Capital expenses
  • Host Organizations:
    • Capital expenses (eg. equipment purchase, such as a musical instrument, camera, computer, etc.)
    • Administrative costs for organizations (eg. staffing, marketing, utilities, etc.)

Eligible Projects

  • Artists:
    • Eligible projects are those in which:
      • The applicant has been invited or accepted as artist in residence by a host organization for a residency of up to 12 months in length.
  • Host Organizations:
    • Eligible projects are those in which:
      • A host organization has invited or accepted an artist in residence.

Ineligible Projects

  • Artists:
    • Ineligible projects also include:
      • Projects produced for the purposes of academic credit or as part of basic training;
      • Projects produced as part of the applicant’s work as an employee of a private or public organisation or institution, including their work as an employee in education, academia, or journalism;
      • Projects which are intended to form part of a new business, an organization or a production studio;
      • Promotional projects such as the preparation and production of marketing or publicity materials, the preparation of a portfolio, the framing of works, invitation cards, or any other material for an opening or a launch.
  • Host Organizations:
    • Ineligible projects also include:
      • Projects produced for the purposes of academic credit or as part of basic training;
      • Projects produced as part of the applicant’s work as an employee of a private or public organization or institution, including their work as an employee in education, academia, or journalism;
      • Projects which are intended to form part of a new business, an organization, or a production studio;

Eligibility Criteria

  • Artist:
    • In order to be eligible for artsnb funding, an applicant must:
      • Be a Canadian citizen, have an affiliation with a First Nation on Turtle Island, be a permanent resident of Canada or have an application for permanent resident in process;
      • Have resided in New Brunswick for at least one year (12 months) prior to the application deadline;
      • Must qualify as a professional artist according to the guidelines.
  • Host Organization:
    • An organization is eligible to apply if:
      • It is established in New Brunswick;
      • It can present as a candidate artist-in-residence a professional artist who has made significant contributions in an arts discipline and who continues to be active in the profession;
      • It can present a project which meets the objectives of the program; and
      • It does not have an overdue Final Report for any project funded by artsnb.
