Deadline: 7 January 2025
The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) INSTANT Scientific Research Programme “Instability and Threshold in Antarctica” is funding 4 scholarships to Early Career Researchers.
Goal
- The goal of SCAR INSTANT fellowships is to increase the engagement of Early Career Scientist (ECR) in INSTANT activities and to promote participation of scientists from regions currently under-represented in INSTANT, i.e., South America, Asia and Africa.
Themes
- The programme is structured into 4 Themes:
- Atmosphere-Ice Interactions: Improved understanding of atmospheric forcing processes on ice sheet dynamics, and vice-versa.
- Ocean-Ice Interactions: Improved understanding of ocean forcing processes of marine-based ice sheet dynamics, and vice-versa.
- Earth-Ice Interactions: Improved understanding of solid Earth processes and feedbacks on ice sheet dynamics and regional to global non-uniform sea-level variations.
- Science-Stakeholder Interactions – Antarctica’s contribution to sea-level change with improved knowledge of instabilities, thresholds and impacts. Here the aim is to integrate the science outputs of Themes 1-3 and improve the ability to reconstruct and predict the Antarctic ice sheet contribution to sea-level change and reduce uncertainties: They will provide greater understanding to policy-makers, practitioners/operators, and publics of the importance of improved projections of the Antarctic contribution to global sea-level change, as well as their impacts and implications.
Funding Information
- Instant fellowships are USD $7500.
Eligible Activities
- Research visits to laboratories, research groups, etc for collaboration
- Research synthesis, fieldwork or analysis
- Science stakeholder engagement
- Educational activities/capacity exchange related to Antarctic research
- Activities to promote leadership and project management skills
- Participation in workshops and schools to develop capability
- Research/activities to support participation in policy decision processes
- Science communication efforts aimed at policy making
- Dissemination and outreach activities, e.g., production of media pieces about INSTANT activities, research highlights, etc
Outcomes
- INSTANT is an umbrella co-ordination initiative with limited funding, and therefore its role is facilitative, but with a strong emphasis on encouraging delivery of outputs and outcomes that benefit both the research community and broader society:
- support for collaborative opportunities,
- help with leveraging funding,
- focus on key research areas and questions,
- delivery of scientific journal articles and papers in the peer-reviewed literature,
- facilitate the co-production of policy-relevant research updates and products as appropriate,
- to encourage research focus relevant to WCRP Core Activities and Grand Challenges and IPCC Reports.
- support capability development and training
- undertake public outreach and engagement
- Stakeholder engagement
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Submissions to the Antarctic Treaty system
- Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
- Other reports
- Workshops and conferences
- Brochures and other PR material
- Stakeholder engagement
Eligibility Criteria
- PhD candidates: Applicants should be currently enrolled in a PhD program
- ECR: those who have obtained a PhD within 7 years of application. The period excludes career breaks due to parental leave, health issues, etc.
- Applicants from underrepresented regions in INSTANT, e.g. South America, Asia, Africa
- The visiting (host) institution must also support the application.
