Call for Applications: APARRI Working Group Grants (US)

APARRI invites proposals for collaborations that focus on a topical theme on Asian Pacific American religions across all disciplines; this includes social sciences, humanities, theology, and interdisciplinary work. Examples of working groups include scholars convening to examine theological approaches to racial violence or the commercial adoption of mindfulness. At the end of the grant cycle, working groups are expected to produce a tangible product that furthers the scholarly and public knowledge of APA religions such as an edited volume, a co-authored article, a podcast series, a public symposium, or other products.

Benefits

• Travel, meals, lodging for group meetings (retreat center, hotel, conference center)
• Stipends for participation in the group (up to $500 per person)
• Honoraria and travel-related expenses for guest speakers
• Equipment, supplies, materials to support group meeting and discussions.

Funding Information

• Working groups may apply for up to $7000, and must have at least three members.

Eligibility Criteria

• The working group leader or coordinator must hold a doctorate and have a formal affiliation with a higher education institution. Independent scholars and graduate students may be members of the working group.
• Working groups must include at least three members.
• No more than two group members of the working group can come from the same institution.
• The project focus must be on Asian Pacific American religions.
• If you were awarded a working group grant, you cannot apply again.
• You cannot be in more than one working group proposal (per cycle).
• They encourage:
  • Independent scholars, graduate students, and relevant staff, such as chaplains, to be a part of the working group.
  • In-person meetings.
  • Interdisciplinary/interethnic/interreligious collaborations.
  • Groups to present their work product at APARRI conferences.

Evaluation Criteria

• Proposals will be evaluated by the following criteria:
  • The potential to advance the scholarly and public knowledge of Asian Pacific American religions, especially of groups that are underrepresented in the field.
  • The feasibility of the project and the likelihood that the working group will produce a tangible product.
  • The potential to foster interdisciplinary, interethnic, and interreligious perspectives.

Application Requirements

• Applications must be submitted online and must include:
  • Completed application form
    • Proposal (no more than 5 pages, double-spaced, in Times New Roman 11-point font, inclusive of any footnotes or endnotes). Please use the following subheadings:
    • Title
    • Extended Abstract (max of 350 words)
    • Goals
    • Significance of project
    • Description of project
    • Product/Deliverable
    • Timeline
    • Budget, including other potential sources of funding (if relevant), with budget justification (2-page limit)
  • CV for each member (2-page limit per individual CV)
