Study of the U.S. Institutes Program for Secondary Educators (Singapore)

The program goal is to strengthen curricula and enhance the quality of teaching about the United States in academic institutions abroad.

Through a combination of traditional, multi-disciplinary, and interdisciplinary approaches, program content will examine the history and evolution of U.S. institutions and values, broadly defined. The program will also illuminate contemporary political, social, and economic debates in American society, and feature curriculum based on the study of how America’s foundations and historical development have shaped and continue to inform U.S. politics, economics, and society.

Program Tracks

• Please note that SUSI programs focus on content and materials about the United States, rather than teaching methods and pedagogy. There are two different program tracks to cater to different groups of educators:
  • Secondary Educators (Teachers): This track is tailored specifically for classroom teachers, and will allow them to delve into either of the following themes:
    • Exploring the concept of the “American Dream”; or
    • Exploring the United States’ progress and future
  • Secondary Educators (Administrators): This track is tailored for experienced administrators, including teacher trainers, curriculum developers, textbook writers, Ministry of Education officials, and others. This track will allow administrators to focus on:
    • Equitable learning communities, the history of local native people in the Northern California region, and U.S. democracy.

Eligibility Criteria

• Singaporean citizens or Singaporean permanent residents
• Candidates should be mid-career, typically between the ages of 30-50, highly motivated, experienced secondary school teachers and administrators whose students are approximately 14-18 years of age
• Ideal candidates are individuals whose home institution is seeking to introduce aspects of U.S. studies into its curricula, develop new courses in the subject of the Institute, enhance and update existing courses on the United States, or offer specialized seminars/workshops for professionals in U.S. studies areas related to the program theme.
• Dedicated to the field of secondary education as demonstrated through past scholarship, accomplishments, and professional duties
• Little to no experience in the U.S. is preferred.
