The South Asia Network for Communication, Displacement and Migration (SAN-CDM) is seeking applications for the Media Conference to connect journalists, community members and researchers interested in migration and forced migration across South Asia, with a shared focus on enabling greater representation of refugees and migrants in media.
“Connecting the Dots” aims to do precisely what its name indicated, to connect the dots between the local, national and regional movements; between acts of violence, instances of catastrophe, and protracted, silent migrations, and the way they are reported. The conference will bring into question notions of regularity and irregularity in migration practices, safe and unsafe routes, as well as the interplay between agency and trafficking.
The conference will place a special emphasis on the importance in reportage in the local languages, that both the displaced and the host community can access.
The conference seeks to address the following questions:
- When immediate and instant reporting on the ground is of utmost importance (especially in the case of disasters), what weight does local reporting, often in the vernacular, carry vis a vis national or international coverage, in English, which might be days late?
- Do local journalists run the risk of getting embroiled in ethnic and sectarian politics? Are they at greater risk than their national or international counterparts?
- How does the vernacular shape the incident/community being reported on?
- How does the same language across borders (case in point: Bengali, Urdu, Tamil, etc.) reify or obliterate boundaries?
Prize Information
- Three stories/news published as a result of the conference will be awarded a prize by DW Akademie on a competitive basis.
Location
- With this focus in mind, the SAN-CDM announces its second in-person conference to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 3-6 November, 2023.
Eligibility Criteria
- They invite refugees, migrants, journalists and researchers form the South Asia region to participate in the conference by organizing hands- on workshops, sharing a current project, share lived experience/narrative or share a performance.
- You are also encouraged to apply with roundtable/session proposals (include abstract), performance (send sample) and other creative projects (send samples).
